E2B vs Cloudflare Sandbox

Both run each sandbox in a Firecracker microVM. E2B is a sandbox SDK on its own; Cloudflare's is driven from a Worker on the Workers Paid plan.

The short answer

Pick E2B for a standalone sandbox SDK with pause and resume and self-hosting. Pick Cloudflare Sandbox when your code already runs on Workers.

The useful distinction

E2B: Firecracker microVM sandboxes driven from an SDK. Your agent runs code there; the loop, the git steps and the pull request are your code. Rush itself runs on E2B.

Cloudflare Sandbox: Linux microVM containers, or isolated Dynamic Workers, started from a Worker to run untrusted or agent-generated code. You build the agent loop.

Buyer questions

QuestionE2BCloudflare Sandbox
What runsNone built in. You bring the agent; E2B ships a prebuilt claude template and guides for Codex and OpenCode.None built in. Cloudflare's docs show Claude Code, Codex and Devin running in a sandbox that belongs to one task.
IsolationFirecracker microVMs with dedicated kernels. A paused sandbox keeps its filesystem and memory, with no automatic deletion. Each container is a Firecracker microVM with its own kernel and network. Largest instance is 4 vCPU, 12 GiB and 20 GB disk. The container must start before the first command.
Result and pull requestLeft to you. E2B's Claude Code guide clones with your token, runs the agent and reads git diff; pushing and opening the pull request is your code.Left to you. Cloudflare's coding agent runner tutorial clones a repository, runs Claude Code and returns a diff, with the instruction not to commit.
MCPAn MCP gateway inside the sandbox reaches 200+ servers from Docker's catalog, or servers you run yourself.Cloudflare runs a managed remote Container MCP server that spins up a sandbox development environment.
TeamAn SDK for your own product. No shared task view or Slack and Linear surface on the pages we read. The Cloudflare account and Workers model. No sandbox-specific sharing on the pages we read.

Where it taps outSessions end at 1 hour on Hobby and 24 hours on Pro unless paused. Sandboxes reach the open internet by default. No result or pull request layer. Pro has a $150 monthly fee before usage.Needs Workers Paid and a Worker and Durable Object around each sandbox. Largest instance is 4 vCPU and 12 GiB. The tutorial ends at a diff, with no pull request or proof.

Decision

When each side wins

E2B wins when

  • You want raw SDK control over each sandbox, for an agent you wrote or for work that is not an agent at all.
  • You must self-host: the runtime is Apache-2.0, runs on one KVM host or ships as Terraform for AWS, GCP and Azure, and E2B also offers BYOC.
  • You want published per-second rates for CPU and RAM and up to 1,100 concurrent sandboxes on its top published tier.

Cloudflare Sandbox wins when

  • You want very small instances (from 1/16 vCPU) billed per second, placed on Cloudflare's network.
  • You want Dynamic Workers isolates for cheap code execution.
  • Your app already lives on Workers, R2 and Durable Objects.

Rush

Where Rush sits

Rush runs on E2B and returns what the coding agent runner tutorials on both leave out: the commit, the pull request and the checks.

Honest limits

Skip Rush if

  • Rush runs three agents: Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode. It does not host an agent you wrote yourself.
  • Repositories come through the Rush GitHub App. A GitLab or Bitbucket repository cannot be a run's repository yet.
  • There is no self-hosted or customer-VPC deployment, and we do not publish a compliance report today.
  • Compute is metered. Free includes 5 agent-hours a month and Pro 40, each with a weekly ceiling.
  • You review the pull request. Rush does not merge for you.
