The useful distinction
Amp orbs: Amp's frontier agent on remote machines (orbs) that keep working when the laptop is closed. Separate company from Sourcegraph as of 2 Dec 2025.
The useful split is who builds the agent. Most products here run their own. Rush runs Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode, the vendors' own CLIs, and returns the result with the record of how it was made.
Head to head
Buyer questions
| Question | Rush | Amp orbs |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode, the vendors' own CLIs, or a saved agent built on one. | Amp agent. Not Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode. |
| Isolation | One E2B microVM per run with its own disk, memory, desktop and browser. It parks between turns and is removed on cancel or after 7 idle days. | Fresh isolated environment per orb thread. Sleeping orb keeps conversation, files, and services. |
| Result and pull request | A run on a repository works on its own branch and opens the pull request; a run whose checks fail ends needs_review, not completed. Reports and files come back as artifacts. | GitHub App acts as you. gh is preinstalled. Docs tell you to put gh pr create in AGENTS.md for automatic PRs. GitHub Enterprise Server is not supported. |
| MCP | Rush is an MCP server at api.prix.dev/mcp with 18 tools. A run also takes MCP servers by connection or inline. | Local and remote MCP. Orb remote MCP via Streamable HTTP. Local laptop MCP servers are not available in orbs unless bundled. |
| Team | Everyone in the org sees the same Projects and runs, with who started each. Automations start runs from GitHub events, schedules, webhooks and Linear. | Workspace threads shared by default. Multiplayer lets teammates prompt the same orb (default one week). Slack via Puck. |
| Starting price | Free 5 agent-hours / month; Pro $20; Team $200 | Hobby free (pay-as-you-go orbs); Individual $20 / month includes 45,000 orb minutes |
| Where it taps out | Three harnesses. Repositories through the GitHub App only. No self-host or customer VPC. A key runs 4 at once by default, up to 100. | Burst limit of 20 metered orbs. Multiplayer exposes secrets and the terminal to the workspace. GHES unsupported. |
Decision
When each side wins
Rush wins when
- The agent should be Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode.
- A coding run opens the pull request itself and is held to its checks.
- Concurrency per key goes to 100, past Amp's burst of 20 metered orbs.
Amp orbs wins when
- Orbs are metered by the minute from $0.08 an hour, and paused orbs cost nothing.
- Teammates can prompt the same orb through multiplayer.
- Token overage is provider API price with no Amp markup, per Amp's docs.
Rush
Where Rush sits
Amp's docs tell you to put gh pr create in AGENTS.md if you want a pull request. A Rush run on a repository opens it itself, and a run whose checks fail ends needs_review.
Honest limits
Skip Rush if
- Rush runs three agents: Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode. It does not host an agent you wrote yourself.
- Repositories come through the Rush GitHub App. A GitLab or Bitbucket repository cannot be a run's repository yet.
- There is no self-hosted or customer-VPC deployment, and we do not publish a compliance report today.
- Compute is metered. Free includes 5 agent-hours a month and Pro 40, each with a weekly ceiling.
- You review the pull request. Rush does not merge for you.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Can I move from Amp orbs to Rush?
Yes. The steps, from Amp Inc.'s own docs, are on the Migrate from Amp orbs to Rush page. Code you already pushed stays where it is.
Does Rush need my own model account?
By default a run uses your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription or API key, and your provider bills the model calls. Rush meters the sandbox compute against your plan, and parked time is free.
